Proverbs 26:18-19 reads: Like a maniac shooting flaming arrows of death is one who deceives their neighbor
and says, “I was only joking!” (NIV)
YEOW! Don't read over that too quickly.
What do we do with that?
Do we disregard it as outdated advice meant only for those around in the time of King Solomon? Or do we take it to heart and change the way we talk to others?
Just the other day, I must confess, I caught myself saying something goofy to a co-worker and following it with, "Just kidding." I immediately felt that twinge of conscience or Holy Spirit reminding me of these verses in Proverbs. "What are you gonna do with that, John?" Ouch!
So how about you. Ever catch yourself saying, "I was only joking"? We've become like "maniacs shooting flaming arrows of death!"
