WHAT IS WEIRD?
WEIRD is the latest message series and discipleship focus at Grace Community Church. WEIRD is based on Craig Groeschel's book of the same title where he outlines how a Christ-centered way of life is the wisest way to live on basically everything: time, money, friendships, sex ... because the "normal" way just makes life worse.
WHY IS WEIRD SO IMPORTANT?
WEIRD is meant to provoke a response. "Normal" is what we as Americans are experiencing right now. We submit that normal is not only not working, but it is also killing us. Literally. Normal people are stressed, overwhelmed, and exhausted. Our relationships are, at best, strained and, in most cases, just surviving. Even though we live in one of the most prosperous places on earth, normal is still living paycheck to paycheck and never getting ahead. In our oversexed world, lust, premarital sex, guilt, and shame are far more common than purity, virginity, and healthy married sex life. And when it comes to God, the majority believe in him, but the teachings of scripture rarely make it into their everyday lives.
WHY WEIRD WORKS
Jesus Christ made this promise: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)
What Jesus is offering is a radical, simple solution.
What would you give to be able to sleep peacefully at night, live peaceably with your loved ones and friends, and to know lightness and joy? Believe it or not, it is possible and it has worked for centuries. But we must start where God tells us. There are no shortcuts. But the pay-off is indescribably powerful and life-giving!
HOW DO I GET INVOLVED?
Commit to attending every message on Sunday during the series.
Purchase the book and start reading.
Join a small group. The mutual sharing of what we learn in the context of a small group of trusted friends will accelerate what we learn and give us the courage to change.
Bring a friend. Be a good neighbor: bring a friend! We all know someone where their "normal" isn't working for them. Do both of yourselves a favor: get "weird" together!
